Abstract

626,036. Jet propulsion plant for aircraft; axial flow compressors. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., MARCHANT, F. C. I., and LEWIS, G. M. Aug. 8, 1947, No. 21999. [Classes 110(i) and 110 (iii)] Turbine wheels 5, 6, on separate shafts 17, 18 drive the two stages 12, 13 of the air compressor. In starting, the high-pressure turbine 5 and compressor 13 are driven by a starting motor through a shaft 28 and the engine auxiliaries being connected to shaft 17 by gear 19 and shaft 33 are also driven. The aeroplane auxiliaries are connected to the low-pressure unit through shaft 48 and gear box 47 and are not driven by the starting motor. The duct 15 connectng the compressor to the combustion chamber 10 forms a waist in the outer casing and the engine auxiliaries lie near it so as not to increase the overall size. The high-pressure compressor ends with two rows of stator blades which straighten out the air flow.
