Abstract
624,868. Gauging surface roughness. B.S.A. TOOLS, Ltd., and OGILVIE, W. July 20, 1946, No. 21718. [Class 106 (ii)] In a surface-roughness gauge having a tracercarrying element manually movable to cause the tracer to move over a test surface, the movement of the tracer-carrying element is controlled by means of a cam. The element 17 which carries the stylus is normally moved slowly by the engagement of a tungsten-carbidetipped projection 21 with a cam 11 driven through reduction gearing by an electric motor (not shown). By rocking a lever 31, the element 17 may be moved, against a spring 23, until the projection 21 engages a second cam 15 which is driven through a step-up gearing from the electric motor and therefore controls a more rapid movement of the element 17. The instrument casing may be racked up and down a support 3 by rotating a knob 41 and may be finely adjusted by means of a second knob 43 geared to the spindle carrying the knob 41. In order to adjust the element 17 for parallelism with the surface under test, the element is slidably mounted in a pivoted guide plate 55 which may be rocked by rotating a spindle 65.
