Abstract

Fluorine is removed from gases such as derive from the fluorination of hydrocarbons or the production of cobaltic fluoride by passing them over a mixture of a non-volatile metal fluoride, e.g. of the alkali or alkaline earth metals, and a metallic oxide or non-volatile metal chloride, e.g. the oxide or chloride of sodium, potassium, calcium, barium, magnesium, cadmium or zinc, the oxide or chloride forming only a single and non-volatile fluoride. Preferably, the mixture or a component thereof is fusible below 1000 DEG C., and the mixture is heated till fusion or partial fusion occurs, solidified and granulated. Generally, the mixture contains 25-50 per cent fluoride. When it contains a chloride, the chlorine evolved may be removed from the effluent gas by passing it over hydrated lime or by washing with aqueous alkali. The gases may be passed through towers containing increasing amounts of the oxide or chloride constituent, the last tower containing oxide or chloride free from fluoride.
