Abstract
624,576. Elastic valves. WYNN, E. W. Feb. 4, 1947, No. 3242. [Class 135] A diaphragm-type valve comprises a body having a straight-through fluid passage 20a, and a synthetic rubber &c. diaphragm 24 of hollow ellipsoidal form whose major axis is at right-angles to the direction of fluid flow and which is clamped at its edges between a flange on a part 23 and a surface 20g of the body, the latter surface being either in a plane containing the centres of inlet and outlet apertures 20b, 20c, or above the said plane, but not less than <SP>2</SP>/ 5 ths of the diameter or depth of the apertures 20b, 20c from the tops thereof. The diaphragm which passes through an elliptical hole in the body and which seats on the lower portion of the passage 20a, is backed by a metal ellipsoidal actuating member 26 to which it is connected by a plate 27 secured to the actuating member by screws, and having a conical plug portion 27a which fits a hollow boss on the diaphragm fitting in a corresponding bore in the actuating member. The valve is operated through a screw 30, connected by a pin 29 to the plate 27, and passing through a nut 31 in a slot in a rotatable operating member 32 to which is attached a handle 34. The nut 31 has flats to prevent it rotating relative to the member 32. In a modification, the diaphragm is formed with a block of dovetail shape, in place of the hollow boss, which block is engaged in a dovetailsection slot in the actuating member. In a further modification, bifurcated rivets are moulded in the diaphragm and the bifurcated portions pass through holes in the actuating member where they are bent outwardly to secure the diaphragm. In both the above modifications, the screw 30 is formed at its lower end with a collar which engages a slot in the actuating member. In a third modification, the head of a bolt is bonded to a boss in the diaphragm and the screwed portion of the bolt engages a tapped hole in the plate 27. The part 23 may be packed with a lubricant, e.g. grease or a thick oil.
