Abstract

612,928. Binding-posts. FURZEHILL LABORATORIES, Ltd., SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S., and KANTOROWICZ, O. P. T. June 6,1946, No. 17275. [Class 38 (i)] A terminal for resiliently clamping a conductor between a screw and a terminal body, to accommodate differential thermal expansion between the conductor and body and creep of the conductor, comprises a body 1 and a clamping screw 5 supported on a resiliently deformable part 7 of the terminal, with means for locking the clamping screw against rotation after adjustment. As shown, deformable parts 7, 71 of the terminal may be formed by saw cuts 3, 3<1> open to the conductor channel and terminating bluntly or in a transverse hole 4. The locking means may comprise a plate 6 adjustably supported above the body by a locking screw 8 which on being tightened binds the clamping screws 5, 5<1> to tapped holes in the plate. The body may alternatively be formed of a strip metal sleeve with overlapping edges cut to form leaf springs, the locking screw drawing the edges together or apart to bind the screws. The latter may wholly occupy blisters or cavities in the conductor channels when tightened down with the conductors absent. Alternatively, the saw cuts may be spaced from the conductor bore, the clamping screw projecting through an aperture into the bore, supported by a saw cut leaf spring, with the lock plate a similar leaf spring. Fig. 14 shows a terminal unit suitable for forming a bank, formed of two similar strip metal parts 51, 51<1> connected by a plate 52 with conductor channels 57, 58. If separate, the lock plate may be secured to the terminal by flanges or lugs. The inner ends of saw cuts may lie at an angle.
