[Class 85] [Also in Group XXXIII] In drilling wells in subaqueous oil-fields by the use of pontoons anchored by means of spuds forced into the sea &c. bed, hydraulic rams c are provided on opposite sides of each of the spuds b and co-operate with spaced pairs of lugs &c. h on the spuds for raising or lowering the latter step-by-step. The rams may engage the .lugs by means of crossheads i which may be rotated to disengage the lugs. The rams may be double-acting, or a pair of oppositely acting rams may be provided on each side of the spud.
