Abstract

611,769. Felt. BOHM, V., and ROWLAND, P. H. May 7, 1946, No. 13824. [Class 42(ii)] Tapered felt articles such as hat bodies are produced by making flat felt sheets having felted portions corresponding in size and shape with the developed or unfolded surface of the article to be formed, the edgings of this surface being unfelted or only slightly felted, the hollow article then being formed and closed along the unfelted or slightly felted edges by felting the latter together. Webs, formed, in the case of wool, by carding, or in that of hair or fur, by blowing, are laid crosswise, one over the other, and felted in a flat felting machine provided with hardening plates or shoes profiled to correspond to the flat development of the hollow body to be made. This produces a sheet 1 having circular, oval or multiangular felted portions 2 with unfelted sectors 3 and separated by unfelted portions 4. The felted portions 2 are then separated, together with narrow unfelted edges 6, from the remainder of the sheet; the edges 6 are then superimposed and felted together in a machine engaging only the unfelted portions. The edges may be grooved or bevelled where they overlap. Different qualities or colours of fibre may be used on the two sides of the felt.
