[Class 124] [Also in Group XXX] Apparatus for cutting-up carbon or other rods comprises a series of axially-spaced rotary cutting discs 12, to which the rods are fed from a hopper 21 by a rotating drum 11 having longitudinal grooves 19 for receiving individual rods, and transverse clearance slots 20 for the cutters 12. In the construction shown, curved guides 25 with stiff wire extensions 26 hold the rods in the drum grooves as they pass the cutters, and until they reach a discharge shoot 28. Fingers 29 extend into the slots 20 to ensure ejection of the rods and to clear the slots of dust. An abutment 22 holds back any rod which fails to enter a groove fully, and the leading edge of this abutment tapers back from the centre so that a bent rod passes through when turned, so that its centre part fully enters a groove, the projecting ends then being forced down by the tapering flanks of the abutment. The cutter discs may be formed by diamonds embedded in appropriate material.
