Abstract
610,036. Heating liquids by dielectric losses. COMMUNICATIONS PATENTS, Ltd., and STANLEY, E. C. June 25, 1945, No. 16098. [Class 39(iii)] In a method of evaporating liquids, e.g. for the concentration of penicillin solutions or certain fruit juices, the liquid is made to circulate and is heated by a high frequency electric field in a zone which does not include the position at which consequent evaporation takes place. In an embodiment, a solution to be concentrated is accommmodated in container of glass or the like comprising two bulbous foam traps 1, 2 with a lower tubular portion 5 connected by a conduit 6 to a vessel 8 into which the concentrated solution spills when it rises above its normal level 7 in the container. The container is connected by a conduit 9 to a suction pump which reduces the pressure in the container. This connection may include a condenser and condensate receiver. The vessel 8 is connected to the conduit 9 by a conduit 10. A controllable supply of solution is drawn from a vessel 11 through a conduit 12 which is terminated by a capillary jet 13 in the container. A bye-pass conduit 18, extending externally from the bottom of the tubular portion 5 enters the container and opens above, or a little below, the level 7. A valve 20 regulates an inlet 19 for atmospheric air which circulates the solution up the bye-pass and so down the tubular portion 5 about which are disposed a pair of electrodes 14, 15 connected to a high frequency oscillator 16. A drainage valve 21 is provided. In a modification the bye-pass is arranged concentrically within the tubular portion 5 and emerges above the level 7 of the solutions. The degree of concentration of the solution may be determined by suitable control of the admission of solution and of the electric supply to the electrodes.
