Abstract
614,856. Thermal switches. TETRA ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and STERN, E. Aug. 6, 1946, No. 23348. [Class 38 (v)] A cut-out suitable for an electric kettle comprises a container 6 secured between limbs 8, 9 of a heating element inside the kettle body 5, and holding a quantity of fusible metal 7. A screw 11, adjustable by a washer 12, has a slotted end carrying a spring tongue 13, preferably of beryllium copper, which extends beyond the surface of the metal 7. A tube 15 extending from the container 6 into a sleeve 16 guides a rod 30 having a rounded end 33 and a circular groove 34 which engages the end of the spring tongue 13, the other end of the rod 30 being secured to a slidable member 20. A guide pin 26 passes through the member 20 by a hole having an enlarged portion 29, a nut 28 secured to the pin 26 limits the motion of the member 20 when urged away from a base 17 by springs 31, 32. Hollow plug pins 21 on the member 20 have internal springs 24 which press plunger contacts 22 into engagement with contacts 35 of the heating element. If the kettle boils dry, the metal 7 fuses, allowing the tongue 13 to flex and disengage the rod 30, thereby enabling the springs 31, 32 to separate the contacts 22, 35. When the metal solidifies again the contacts can be re-engaged.
