Abstract
614,156. Atomic piles. CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE, (formerly CAISSE NATIONALE DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE). April 29, 1940, No. 7662. Convention date, May 1, 1939. [Class 39 (i)] An atomic pile comprises a homogeneous or heterogeneous distribution of deuterium (free or combined) or helium as a moderator in a mass of uranium or thorium, means for initiating a chain reaction by generating neutrons inside or outside the mass and means for removing the heat developed. The moderator may be in gaseous, liquid or solid (e.g. powder) form and the uranium may be present as uranium carbide. Thick diffusing layers, e.g. iron, lead, beryllium, calcium carbonate, surround the fissile mass and reflect neutrons which would otherwise escape, thereby reducing the critical size of the mass. This critical size is also reduced by increasing density, as by using compressed uranium powder. The reaction is initiated by cosmic radiation or by introducing a mixture of radium and beryllium. Stabilization is stated to be achieved by rising temperature and the reaction is stopped by separating two parts of the fissile mass or by increasing the quantity of the moderator. Liberated heat energy is removed by conduction, convection or radiation or by performing endothermal reactions within the pile. The moderator itself may be used for the removal of this heat energy. Emitted radiations may provide additional energy. Water screens protect the operators of the pile. By-products comprise radio-active or rare isotopes or mixtures of isotopes in anomalous proportions. The Specification refers to fast neutrons reacting with deuterium and beryllium within the pile, each neutron producing two slow neutrons.
