Abstract
603,867. Supply systems for discharge lamps. COLE, Ltd., E. K., and MOORE, F. J. Nov. 2, 1945, No. 29075. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A thermal starting switch for a discharge lamp, comprises normallyclosed contacts 1A, 2A, on similarly deflecting bimetal strips 1, 2, which carry the cathode preheating current, the contacts being opened on heating by a low-resistance heater 7 causing strip 2 to move towards the panel 8, so that contacts 1A, 2A disengage and 2A, 3A engage. If the lamp strikes, the voltage drop across the lamp applied to a subsidiary heating circuit consisting of parallel connected resistors 5, 6, is insufficient to cause strip 3 to move away from strip 2. If the lamp fails to strike, however, the full mains voltage is applied to the heaters 5, 6, and the latter, which has an inversevoltage characteristic, heats strip 3 rapidly and opens contacts 2A, 3A, allowing strip 2 to cool and contacts 1A, 2A to reclose. A lock-out device, consisting of a contact engaging a latch on a bimetal strip, may be provided. Alternatively, according to the Provisional Specification, a third resistance, in series with the two subsidiary heaters, may be provided so that the strip 1 is gradually heated, thereby causing contacts 1A, 2A, 3A, to engage and lock out the switch.
