Abstract
Yarns, threads, cords and ropes of highly polymerized linear esters of glycols of general formula OH(CH2)nOH where n is greater than 1 but less than 10 with terephthalic acid are made by a process comprising the step of twisting together a bundle of filaments, and drawing in the solid state before and/or after the twisting step. Suitable glycols are ethylene, trimethylene, tetramethylene, hexamethylene and decamethylene glycols, and these may be heated with terephthalic acid or any of its aliphatic or aryl esters and half esters, its acid halides, ammonium and amine salts. Preferably polyethylene terephthalate (M.P. 240 DEG C.) is used. The filaments already drawn to 600 per cent are further drawn to remove residual stretch of order of 1-20 per cent if desired by drawing at a temperature at least as high as that of the original drawing but not higher than 30 DEG C. below the melting point of the polymer. Heat setting may also be carried out while the articles are under tension by heating to a temperature at least as high as the drawing temperature but not higher than 30 DEG C. below the melting point. Yarns so produced have strength of 4-8 g/denier, and may be of any thickness, say 10-20,000 denier, and may be utilized in weaving or knitting operations. Threads are particularly useful as sewing thread. The polymers being resistant to moisture, salt water and bacteria are of use in the production of marine ropes and ropes for the chemical industry. In an example a highly polymeric ethylene terephthalate is melted, filtered through a sand pack and extruded into filaments. The filaments are wound on to a bobbin giving a yarn of 105 denier. Three such yarns are wound on to a common bobbin to give a 30 filament yarn of 214 denier, which is cold drawn to 5.5 times its original length and twisted on to a cone to give a 30 filament yarn of 60 denier having 1.5 twists to the inch.
