Abstract

603,724. Feeding webs. WILLIAMS, W. P. (Standard Register Co.). Sept. 4, 1945, No. 22763. [Class 100(i)] [Also in Group XV] A feeding device for advancing a continuous record strip, e.g. in an autographic register, through successive step by step movements, comprises power means for producing vibratory movements, means for transmitting the movements to impart a unidirectional feed to the strip, means for arresting the strip feeding device when the strip has advanced a desired total amount, and means for disengaging the arresting means when desired thereby enabling the power means to continue the feed. As shown in Fig. 1, a rack 5 attached to a spring 6 at one end and to the core of an electromagnet 4 at the other, carries an adjustable pin 7 adapted to engage a pivoted contact arm 9 and to urge it against the action of a spring 13, into engagement with a contact 11 to close the circuit which energises the solenoid; a pin on the rack moves the arm 9 back if the spring 13 fails to operate. Thus the rack 5 is reciprocated continuously by the spring 6 and the solenoid 4. In a modification, Fig. 7, the solenoid and spring are reversed and the solenoid circuit is closed by a contact 24 on the rack 5 engaging a contact 25 on a detent arm 19. In both forms, a pinion 14 engages with the rack 5 and with a pinion 15 freely mounted on a shaft 16 and driving through pawl and ratchet mechanism, a pin wheel 3 which feeds the strip. A cam disc 21 fixed to the pin wheel 3 has a recess 20 which the spring-held detent arm 19 engages when a predetermined length of strip has been fed, thereby stopping the movement of the rack 5. Depression of a plunger 22 lowers the arm 19 and allows the feed to continue. A spring-pressed pawl 23 pivoted to the bottom of the plunger 22 bears against a flat part 7 of the arm 19 when the plunger is raised, Fig. 1, but when it is fully depressed, the pawl 23 slides on the inclined part 28 of the arm 19 and allows the arm to rise again, even though the plunger is still depressed.
