Abstract
603,642. Shaft couplings ; universal joints. JULIEN, M. F. A. July 31, 1945, No. 19682. Convention date, June 2, 1943. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXII] In a resilient joint, mounting or like device comprising at least one annular element of rubber-like material interposed between and adhering to two coaxial rigid elements having a form defined by the rotation of an oblique generatrix about the axis of the resilient element, the rigid elements are urged into relative axial displacement when the device is assembled, to subject the rubber to an initial state of compression. As applied to a cardan joint, two of the resilient devices are employed, each of which comprises an outer, rigid frustoconical member 3, Fig. 11, and a similar inner member 2 between which is bonded a rubber member 1. Each unit, as shown in Fig. 11, is bolted by flanges 34 on the outer elements 3 to an identical unit, thereby axially displacing each inner element 2 in order to remove stresses set up in the rubber bonding operation and/or to apply pre-stressing of the rubber (see Group XXXII). The inner rigid member 2 is bolted to a sleeve 38, Fig. 10, which is in slidable splined engagement with one of the transmission shafts 36. The other shaft 35 is secured to the flanges 34 of the outer rigid members 3 by means of a member 37.
