603,409. Batteries. BURGESS BATTERY CO. Oct. 20, 1945, No. 27632. Convention date, Jan. 17. [Class 53] The electrolyte of a primary battery consists of an emulsion of the aqueous electrolyte solution with a liquid immiscible with water. In an example, a solution of lithium bromide is mixed with carbon tetrachloride and an emulsifying agent. The mixture is shaken till a stable emulsion is produced. Other examples comprise emulsions of lithium chloride and chloroform and solutions of ammonium chloride and zinc chloride emulsified with kerosene. Amyl acetate may also be used as the immiscible liquid. The emulsifying agent may also be a wetting agent or separate wetting agents may be added. Fig. 1 shows a battery comprising a number of cells joined in series and employing an emulsified electrolyte enclosed in a glass container 35 which is broken when the battery is required for use. The elements of each cell comprise a silver plate 17, a layer 18 of silver bromide or other halide of silver, a layer of blotting paper 19 and a magnesium plate 20, all of which rest on ribs 12, 13 projecting from the bottom of the container. The lower end of each magnesium plate is welded or otherwise connected to the adjacent silver plate 17 of the next cell, the two plates being separated over the rest of their surfaces by varnished paper or other impervious insulating material 21. When the battery is to be activated, the container 35 is broken by means of a plunger 40. Zinc, aluminium, copper or carbon plates may be used instead of silver and magnesium and manganese dioxide may be used as the depolarizer,
