Abstract

6 0 3 , 3 0 3 . Tufting - machines. PICKWORTH, C. L. July 17, 1945, No. 18283. Convention date, June 28, 1944. [Class 112] A tufting-machine comprises a loopholding member, a loop-shearing member pivoted thereto, and cutting edges on the two members to coact in the manner of scissors to cut the loops. In the arrangement shown, the machine has an oscillating under-shaft, to which is adjustably clamped a hook-carrier 15, a hook 16 being adjustably secured to the carrier; the part of the hook near the shank has a cutting edge which co-operates with a similar edge on a shearing member 19 pivoted to the shank of the hook 16 and slotted at its other end to engage a pin 22 adjustably mounted on the bed of the machine. A guard member 30 fixed to the carrier 15 guides the needle with its inner face, and has its upper edge bevelled to deflect the needle away from the plane of the hook if necessary. The hook is projected through the needle loop as the needle rises and its continued movement closes the cutting edges to shear a loop or loops previously formed, the arrangement being such that at least one complete loop is always retained on the hook. In a modification, the carrier 15 is mounted on another shaft which is oscillated by means of an arm engaging a cam on the first shaft and in further modification the hook carrier is mounted to slide horizontally on fixed guides transverse to the shaft under the action of a cam on the shaft; both these arrangements permit the motion of the hook to be determined independently of the motion of the shaft and can be used with a rotating shaft. Specification 603,353 is referred to.
