Abstract
Aluminium or aluminium alloys, copper or copper alloys, and nickel or nickel alloys are degassed by treating the molten metal or alloy with hexachlorethane, preferably pressed into the form of a tablet with or without other substances, other than borofluorides, having a grain refining effect. A perforated plunger of iron or other suitable material is used to plunge the hexachlorethane below the surface of the metal while permitting the passage of the gas liberated on decomposition.
