Abstract

Metal alloys are protected from corrosion during a succession of one or more heat-treating operations and one or more fabricating operations by applying to the surface of the metal or alloy a protective film of another metal having a melting point higher than the temperatures employed in the heat-treating, such as copper, and then removing the film by dissolving or by reverse electrolysis after the completion of all the operations referred to above. When applied to the treatment of stainless steels, the annealings are carried out in a controlled atmosphere furnace at temperatures ranging from 1,400 degrees F. to 2,200 degrees F. Specification 565,709 is referred to.
