600,987. Treating gases with liquids. KENNY, R. J. Oct. 9, 1945, No. 26330. Convention date, July 31, 1944. [Class 55(ii)] In apparatus for washing and cooling air, or cooling water, &c., comprising a vaned drum dipping into water and rotated by a draught of air from a fan 15 facing one end of the drum an air leakage check ring 27 at this end preferably co-operating with a cowl 26 secured to the casing is also vaned to assist rotation. The drum is built up of four spaced layers of expanded metal 9 secured around the rims 8 of spiders 5, 6, 7, and each carrying a helically wound tape or webbing 10 with narrow spaces between the turns these spaces being staggered in relation to these or adjacent layers. The drum shaft is mounted in anti-friction bearings over a water trough 13 and is caused to rotate slowly by means of vanes 18, 19 on the spiders 5, 6 in the path of the air current from the fan. The remote end of the drum is closed, air being caused to pass outwardly through the wetted layers and thence through louvres 24 of a window opening. Means may be provided, as by hand operated gearing or by pulleys on a countershaft with a belt from the fan shaft and to the drum, to impart a positive drive at starting until the drum is completely wet.
