Abstract
600,803. Coated fabric or felt. PLATT, S., STREET, W. O., and BURY FELT MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. Jan. 8,1944, Nos. 397 and 11606. [Class 140] Grained imitation leather or skin is made by producing a firmly adhered layer of plastic material on a shrinkable fibrous fabric base and then shrinking the base. Curing of the plastic material, if required, may be effected either before or after shrinking. The base may be a compressed or woven felt, woven textile cloth or material in the nature of blanketing, woollen felt being preferred. The base may be subjected to an initial shrinking process, with or without subsequent stretching, and it may be dyed. The plastic material may be cellulose nitrate or acetate, polyvinyl chloride, neoprene, or polythene, suitable plasticisers, pigments, and fillers (e.g. china clay) being added. The plastic material may be applied as a spreading solution or latex or as a preformed sheet, which may be carried by a thin cotton cloth which is adhered to the shrinkable fabric. In examples, (1) hardened and milled woollen felt is stretched, dried, cropped, and pressed, is spread with nine coats of pigmented cellulose nitrate composition, is calendered, wetted with acidified water containing a wetting agent, is further milled, and is dried; (2) dyed felt is treated similarly to example (1), with considerable longitudinal stretching; (3) the procedure is similar to example (1), using a pigmented polyvinyl chloride composition including lead silicate and blanc fixe; (4) the felt is produced as in (1), stretched as in (2), coated as in (3), and further processed as in (1); and (5) the procedure is similar to example (1), using pigmented rubber latex.
