Abstract

609,806. Methods of erecting buildings. HALL, D. C. Nov. 9, 1943, No. 18611. [Class 20(i)] Relates to the construction of houses, &c. from prefabricated building units, and consists in (i) providing a readily transportable set of such units comprising a ground floor storey unit and a roof unit, the latter being of slab form, and the ground floor unit having integral floor and wall portions so that the said unit constitutes a container in which wall portions, partitions, &c., are packed; (ii) providing additionally in the set of units, when required, an intermediate storey (or first floor) unit, similar to the ground floor unit and also containing wall portions, &c., and so arranging the whole of the units in such a set as to form a transport package or delivery stack with the various units disposed in the required order and (iii) erecting by a special method a building constructed of the units in a number of the said delivery stacks placed together on the building site. Fig. 3 shows a ground floor unit 1, a first floor unit 7, and a roof unit 8, constructed and stacked together as described above, the units 1, being about half-storey height, and containing wall portions for completing the exterior walls to the height of the respective storeys, as well as partitions and fittings. The units 1, 7 comprise external wall portions along three sides of the unit, but intermediate units 11, 13, Fig. 4. have external wall portions at their ends only. Fig. 4 shows three of the " delivery stacks" as they are placed in juxtaposition on the building site, and these stacks contain all the main components of the building. The method of erection is as follows. The roof units, 8, 15, 16 are first secured together in any suitable way, as by long bolts and dowels, and the complete roof is then raised by lifting-tackle, &c., to a position such as to allow completion of the upper storey wall and partitions. When this has been done, the units of the upper storey having been secured together by long bolts, the roof is lowered on to the walls and partitions of the upper storey and secured thereto by bolts, tie-rods, &c. The complete upper storey and roof are elevated to such a position as to allow completion of the ground floor storey after the base portions thereof have been bolted together. The upper storey with the attached roof is then lowered into position to complete the structure. A similar method may be followed for erecting a building having three or more storeys. The sections of the walls and partitions may be tapered, and fitted together by means of tongue-andgroove joints, the intermediate sections being forced into position by the weight of the roof or of the combined roof and upper storey. The wall units have preformed windows and doors where required, and some may be formed with fireplaces or flues. Gas and water pipes, conduits for electric wiring, &c., may be embodied in the walling units, for connection where necessary with external supplies, and various units may have preformed fittings for baths, stoves and other appliances. The roof units may carry chimney and vent units, and guttering to which vertical rainwater piping on wall units may be connected. Intermediate storey units have apertures for accommodating staircases.
