Abstract

609,008. Hydraulic shock-absorbers; liquid springs. DOWTY, G. H. March 25, 1946, No. 9186. [Class 108 (iii)] A resilient device comprises a plunger 2 operating in a cylinder 1 resiliently to compress entrapped liquid and having a head 3 partitioning the cylinder into two compartments a, b, flow communication passage means 7 leading out from the bore of the cylinder to extend between the compartments a, b, and incorporating flow restriction means 8 operative to provide resistance to liquid flow in at least one direction of plunger travel. A basic damping effect may be provided by a port or ports in the head 3 or by restricted leakage around the head. In the construction shown the passage means 7 are in the form of external pipes 7, 9, which alternatively may be formed as ducts in the cylinder wall. The flow restriction means 8, which alternatively may be formed integral with the cylinder, has a flap valve 11 formed with a damping orifice 13 the area of which is adjustable by a needle valve 14.
