Abstract
Viscose rayon suitable for making pile fabrics is made by a process comprising the following combination of steps taken during the preparation and the spinning of the viscose: (1) precooling of the viscose to a temperature below 15 DEG C.; (2) filtration of the viscose in the presence of finely dispersed filter-aid substances such as diatomite; (3) using caustic soda lye containing not more than 0.8 per cent of hemi-cellulose in the preparation of the viscose. Preferably, the filtered viscose is conveyed in pipes made of inert metal such as stainless steel, nickel, or nickel alloys. Gear-wheel pumps may be used for supplying the viscose to the spinnerets. The spinnerets should be kept clean and they should be free from scratches. Clogging may be reduced by carrying out the spinning in presence of cation-active substances or other substances having a similar effect. The spinning is preferably carried out with horizontal travel of the filaments in the coagulation bath so as to reduce the length of travel of the cooled viscose in the supply pipe which is immersed in the coagulation bath. The viscose may be cooled by surrounding the swan-neck or the filter candle with a cooling bath, but it is preferable to carry it out on the mass of the viscose, e.g. by means of an apparatus comprising thin plates between which the viscose circulates in thin layers. Specification 469,817 is referred to.
