Abstract

606,904. Pulse generating circuits. RATSEY, O. L., and BUCKINGHAM, J. Sept. 28, 1945, No. 25266. [Class 40 (vi)] A pulse generator comprises a transmission line or delay network with means for statically changing the line and a switching device for discharging the line into an output load. Fig. 5 shows a rectangular pulse generator comprising a delay network connected to a load resistance R through a grid-controlled gas discharge tube B, the resistance R having a value equal to the surge impedance of the line. The tube B is provided with a source F of subsidiary triggering pulses to control the instant of discharge. When tube B conducts, a positive pulse equal to V/2 where V is the voltage to which the line is charged, is applied to the load R for a period until the pulse reflected from the open end of the line reaches the load. The line is recharged through half-wave rectifier E during the quiescent period. Alternatively, a D.C. supply may be provided in place of the A.C. supply and rectifier arrangement, a suitable A.C. impedance then being included to prevent a short circuit at the end of the pulse, or a switching means may be employed to disconnect the D.C. charging supply during each discharge period. The value of resistance R may be made greater or less than the value of the surge impedance of the line to provide stepped waveforms. Reference has been directed by the Controller to Specifications 578,510, 579,679 and 582,850.
