Abstract
606,819. Coating glass. CINEMA-TELEVISION, Ltd., and LANCE, T. M. C. Jan. 7, 1946, No. 571. [Class 56] [Also in Group XL (a)] A method of manufacturing a luminescent screen responsive to cathode rays or X-rays comprises binding particles of luminescent material to a supporting surface by applying finely divided glass and the particles in a dry state to the supporting surface and heating the glass until it melts. The glass is of low-melting point and can be mixed with the particles prior to deposition on the supporting surface or the glass and the particles can be deposited separately on the supporting surface. In one example finely powdered low-melting point glass is mixed with dry fluorescent powder, e.g. zinc beryllium silicate and the mixture is deposited on to a glass plate through a silk screen by the silk screen process. The plate is then placed in a furnace, the temperature is raised until the glass melts and the plate is then removed. A rectangular screen with rounded corners can be formed or luminous lettering' or framing or surrounds of another colour can be applied to the screen. Screens having discrete areas covered with different fluorescent materials fluorescing in two or three different colours for use in a colour television system can be made metallic oxides or salts may be dissolved in the binder glass in its initial molten condition prior to its reduction to finely divided form in order to obtain a semi-conducting binder. Specifications 499,136 and 559,573, [Group XL], are referred to.
