Abstract
606,506. Hydraulic couplings. BENZLER, B. L. May 24, 1945, No. 13002. Convention date, April 6, 1944. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] In a reciprocating engine, adapted for use also as a pump which may form part of a hydraulic coupling, having an oscillatory piston 5 displaceable axially between two rotors 3, 4 and bevelled off helically at its ends to engage similarly formed ends on the rotors, the piston is adapted to be rotated about its axis through 0-180 degrees between abutments or guide slits in the cylinder and piston respectively, while the rotors are fixedly secured on their axis. As shown, studs or guide pins 6 engage in slits 10 on the piston, but a single stud adjustable along a circumferential slit in the cylinder may engage a single slit in the piston to adjust the delivery of the pump or power of the motor. The guide pin 6, Fig. 7, is movable along a longitudinal groove 10 when a toothed ring 14 carrying it is rotated by a wormoperatively connected to a hand wheel 16. Two or more pumps 20, 21, Fig. 8, may be actuated by a driving shaft 18 and their output varied by a sleeve 32 carrying pins movable in oblique slits in the cylinder block 17, the pump delivering to similarly constructed motors 22, 23 which drive a shaft 19 through gearing 28, 29. The shaft of the rotors may be mounted in conical bearings to facilitate taking up wear and the inlet and delivery passages be provided in the bearings. One rotor may be replaced by a return spring.
