Abstract
In a two-stage cyclical ammonia-soda type process, in which pure sodium bicarbonate is separated in the first stage and in the second stage pure ammonium chloride is separated from a solution containing an excess of ammonia to leave a solution having the same composition as the original solution which contains sodium chloride, ammonia and carbon-dioxide, (a) the temperature of the solution at end of the first stage exceeds, e.g. by at least 10 DEG C. that of the solution at end of the second stage, (b) all or most of the sodium chloride is added during the second stage and all or most of the carbon dioxide is added during the first stage, and (c) the ammonia is added wholly or largely during the second stage. The reaction of the first stage may be carried out between 20 DEG and 40 DEG C. and that of the second stage at a temperature below 20 DEG C., while the final solutions of the first and second stages may be quite or almost saturated with ammonium chloride, ammonium bicarbonate and sodium bicarbonate and ammonium chloride, sodium bicarbonate and sodium chloride respectively. The ammonia and carbon dioxide may be added wholly or mainly in gaseous form or in part as ammonium carbonate, bicarbonate or carbamate. Limits of variation of the molar proportions NH3, NH4, Na, HCO3 and Cl are specified.
