Abstract

In a method of forming an adhesive oxidized metallic compound coating on a support a coating of an oxidizable compound of a metal with sulphur, selenium, tellurium or phosphorus is applied to the support by thermal evaporation in a vacuum and oxidized by subjecting it to glow discharge in an oxygen containing-atmosphere. Zinc or lead sulphate, phosphate, tellurate or selenate may be formed by coating the support which may be glass, metal or a piece of pottery with zinc or lead sulphide, phosphide, telluride or selenide and then oxidizing the deposition by thermal evaporation and the oxidation may take place in the same vessel and a further coating of metal may be deposited on the layer so formed. Specifications 605,871 and 605,872 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the oxidation of tungstide to tungstate and the oxidation of a coating of metal, e.g. tin, aluminium, silver and lead, to the oxide of the metal. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
