Abstract

A tobacco for smoking, snuffing or chewing contains at least one added substance such that a biologically appreciable quantity of vitamin PP (nicotinamid), i.e. at least one hundredth of a gram of the vitamin per kilogram of tobacco is added to the products resulting from the consumption of the tobacco and absorbed by the consumer. Alternatively, the vitamin may be associated with the means used for consuming the tobacco such as a tobacco pipe. The quantity of vitamin present should preferably be sufficient to neutralize at least parts of the toxic effects of the tobacco. The vitamin may be added directly to the tobacco or the vitamin may be produced by the addition to the tobacco of a substance which produces the vitamin by the heat of combustion of the tobacco, or the substance may be a generator of vitamin PP. In one example, 1 kilogram of dry tobacco is mixed with 500 grams of an aqueous solution containing from 0.6-10 per cent of vitamin PP, and the tobacco then dried to give the required moisture content. In another example, using a reagent which transforms nicotine into vitamin PP during combustion of the tobacco, 500 grams of an aqueous solution containing from 2 to 10 per cent of ferro chloride and from 0.2 to 2 per cent of colloidal manganese dioxide or manganese nitrate is added to the dry tobacco and the tobacco then suitably dried. When the invention is embodied in a smoking expedient, the vitamin or generating agent may be present in a filter located in the end of a cigarette or the smoke duct of a pipe, cigar holder or cigarette holder. Or a small central paper tube containing the vitamin or its generator may be located in a cigarette. Or a baffle device containing the vitamin may be placed in a pipe below its bowl and serve also as a condenser.
