Abstract

599,164. Liquid-fuel burners. BRITISH COMBUSTION EQUIPMENT, Ltd., KEMP, W., and TOMLINSON, J. T. Sept. 14, 1945, No. 23715. [Class 75 (i)] In a liquid-fuel burner, the fuel pressure operates means for holding the sprayer to the fuel supply connection, the operation being effected by the movement of a control valve. The sprayer may be mounted on a ball or cone joint f, Fig. 2, on a piston d sliding in a cylinder c provided with fuel supply openings c<1>, c<2> controlled by the valve i, which may take up one of four positions : " lock," "open," " release " and " shut ". The valve i may be provided with a right-angled port i<1>, and an axial port i<2> communicating with the passage c<1>. If the valve is in the position " lock," Fig. 1, the port i<1> is open to the fuel supply m so that fuel is supplied through ports i<1>, i<2> to the underside of the piston to cause the piston to rise and make a joint with the sprayer. In the position " open," the port i<1> is open to the fuel supply m and communicates with the passage c<2> so that some fuel passes through port i<1> and passage c<2> to the sprayer, and some passes through ports i<1>, i<2> and passage c<1> to urge the piston and lock the sprayer joint. In the position " release," the port i<1> communicates with the passage c<2> and is open to the atmosphere through a passage n, so that any oil from the burner is released through passage c<2>, port i<1> and passage n, while any oil from beneath the piston is released through passage c<1>, ports i<2>, i' and passage n, a tray being provided if desired, to receive this waste fuel. In the position ''shut," the port i<1> is open to the atmosphere through the passage n so that fuel is released from under the piston. When the valve is in either of the " shut " or '' release " positions. no fuel is supplied to the underside of the piston so that it is downwardly urged by a spring and the sprayer may be removed, a spring-pressed ball g closing the opening in the joint f. The sprayer is provided with a projection h to depress the ball g and allow the passage of fuel through the opening of the joint f.
