[Classes 78(ii) and 78(iii)] [Also in Group XXI] Relates to load-handling machines of the kind comprising a tractor on which a scoop or shovel carried between pivoted side arms is adapted to be lowered into a position adjacent the ground when the arms move to a downwardly inclined position and then forced by the tractor into the material being handled, such as sand or earth, and then raised by a power driven windlass and rope and pulley gearing to discharge its contents into a truck or the like. According to the invention the driving axle of the tractor is at the front, and the steering axle at the rear and a movable counterweight is provided between these axles which is controlled by the movement of the side arms such that when these arms move to a horizontal position away from the ground tho counterweight moves nearer to the steering axle and when the arms are lowered the counterweight moves towards the driving axle. In the embodiment shown, the tractor is provided with a scoop 6 pivotally mounted on a pair of arms 7 pivoted on the tractor frame at 8, the arms being raised to the unloading position shown in chain lines by a cable 12 anchored at 13 and passing round pulleys 14, 15 to a winch 5 driven from the tractor engine 2. Rotation of the winch drum 36 to raise the arms 7 automatically moves a counterweight 20 along track members 21 towards the steering axle 16. The counterweight runs on rollers 24 on flanges 22 of the members 21 and is connected to a rope 39 which is anchored at 40 and passes around pulleys 29 on the weight and a pulley 33 on the members 21 to a drum 34 which is connected to the winch drum 36 through spur wheels 37, 38. When the drum 36 is operated to lower the arms 7, the weight 20 is returned to the position shown in Fig. 1 by a rope 41 anchored to the weight at 42 and passing over two pulleys 31 on the members 21 and over a pulley 28 on the weight to an anchorage 43 on the drum 34. The counterweight may comprise two sliding weights arranged in guides one on each side of the tractor and connected to the arms 7 by ropes. Alternatively the counterweight may be in the form of a pendulum swung by the movements of the arms 7 through cam or other gearing.
