597,097. Change-speed chain-gear. RAS, J. J. M. P. March 29, 1945, Nos. 7979 and 7980. Convention dates, Jan. 20, 1943, and Nov. 9, 1943. [Class 80(ii)] In a cycle change-speed gear, a chainshift sprocket 5, freely mounted between cheeks 8 on a spindle 7 slidable in a support arm 4, is connected to the arm by a bentover plate spring 13, which acts as a guide and as the return-spring for the cable 9, 11; by means of which the sprocket and spindle are actuated to shift the chain from one sprocket 24<SP>1</SP>, 24<SP>2</SP> &c. to another on the rear hub of the cycle. The spindle 7 slides in lubricated bushings in the arm 4, and a nut 21 limits its inward movement. The support-arm 4 swings on a bracket 1 secured to the cycle-frame only by the nut of the rear-hub spindle, and the arm is loaded by a chain-tension spring 8.
