Abstract

[Class 44] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXVIII] A contractible metal ring a, Figs. 6 and 7, for use in pipe couplings, with an internal cylindrical face which may be roughened or serrated and an external conical face, has a series of radial slots a<2> and a<3> formed alternately on its upper and lower surface so as to produce a zig-zag form, Fig. 7a. A pipe coupling, Fig. 1, embodying two of said rings has two clamping rings b with conical holes to fit the rings a, packing rings d and d<1> and an abutment sleeve e with upwardly and outward sloping ends and concave inner surfaces terminating at an internal flange e<2> on which the pipe ends rest. When the bolts b<1> are tightened the packing d is first compressed and on further tightening the rings a contract and grip the pipe ends. In a modification the clamping rings may have extensions, which are externally threaded, engaging a central and common internally threaded sleeve. In a further modification the clamping rings have an equal number of spaced segments extending inwardly so that when the coupling is tightened they intermesh and form a cylindrical housing for the joint. The contractible rings for the latter coupling may have a four or five-sided transverse section. A further modification for joining pipes of different thickness with the same inside diameter has a packing and contractible ring mounted on the thin pipe whose end butts against the thicker pipe end which slopes upwardly and outward and the joint is held by a clamping sleeve which is conical at one end to fit the contractible ring and thread internally at the other to engage an external thread on the larger pipe.
