Abstract
A method of producing substantially oxygen-free copper comprises melting copper, e.g. cathode copper, in contact with carbon heated to a temperature above the melting point of copper and protecting the exposed surface of the resulting molten copper with a cover of finely-divided carbon, whereby the molten copper is deoxidised by contact with the hot carbon, and removing the reducing gases from the resulting deoxidised copper by treatment thereof with relatively pure boron or a boroncopper alloy. The amount of boron used may be 0.005-0.02 per cent by weight of the copper treated, and a residual amount of boron of less than 0.02 per cent, e.g. not more than 0.01 per cent, may be left in the copper. The operation may be performed in a graphite crucible which may be heated in a coreless induction furnace. Specification 596,208 and U.S.A. Specification 2,195,433 are referred to.
