Abstract

594,228. Hand-saws. YOUNG, S. G. Dec. 13, 1943, No. 20820. [Class 61 (ii)] A hack-saw of the type formed of two frame members adjustable relatively to each other is provided with a locking means comprising rack teeth on one of the members engaged, directly or indirectly, by a worm rotatably mounted on the other member. As shown, one end of the adjustable frame member 1 is received in a channel or guideway 5 in the fixed frame member. The latter has a hand grip 7 formed integrally with an arm 6 in which is mounted a conical worm 10 controlled by a finger-piece 13. The worm engages teeth 9 on the adjustable member and may have an interrupted thread to allow of more rapid adjustment. Means 3 with projections 4 for holding a saw blade are provided on both members. In a modification, the worm is cylindrical and engages a toothed wheel or quadrant which is interposed between the worm and the teeth on the adjustable frame member. The wheel is freely rotatable on a spindle mounted in the fixed frame member. The worm may be provided on the adjustable frame member in which case the teeth are formed in the fixed frame member.
