Abstract

587,301. Fences. KEW, A. G. Nov. 28, 1944, No. 23667. [Class 45] A fitting for securing a fence rail 2 to a post 1 comprises a U-shaped sheet-metal bracket 3 adapted to embrace the end of the rail and a strap 7 with offset ends adapted to be passed between the bottom of the bracket and the end of the rail and to be bolted or otherwise secured to the post to clamp the bracket thereto. As shown in Fig. 2, a U-shaped clip 4 is inserted between the arms of the bracket 3 and the rail so that its cross-member 5 supports the rail, a bolt 6 securing the parts together. In modifications, the cross-member 5 is formed to suit a rail having bevelled end faces and a rail of triangular section reduced at its ends. In all the above constructions the rail is free to turn about the axis of the bolt 6. Fig. 7, however, shows a construction in which the clip 4 is omitted and the arms of the bracket 3 are formed with inturned flanges 5c to support the rail, while Fig. 10 shows a U-shaped packing piece 12 fixed in place by one of a pair of screws 11. When a U-shaped clip is used it may be retained in position in the bracket during assembly of the fence by a projecting rim around the hole in one part, such as the rim 4a, Fig. 11, engaging in the hole in the other part.
