Abstract

587,127. Measuring surface-roughness. KAPELLA, Ltd., and REASON, R. E. July 5, 1944, No. 12811. [Class 106 (ii)] The pick-up head D carrying the stylus G of a surface-roughness measuring device is connected to the traversing bar B by means such as a pair of spring-ligament hinges C, C<1> which restrict movement between the head and the bar to a direction perpendicular to the work surface F. A skid E bears with a rounded face on the work surface and is detachably secured to the head D. Excess motion of the head is limited by stops C<3>. The skid may have a work-engaging sole-plate freely mounted upon it in the manner shown in Specification 577,139. In a modification, the hinges are replaced by a guide in which the portion D<1> of the head D moves in plunger-fashion, balls or rollers being provided to minimise friction. Specification 539,273 also is referred to.
