Abstract
586,836. Centrifugal pumps. NEWTON, E. P. (Turbo Engineering Corporation). May 4, 1943, No. 7065. [Classes 110 (i) and 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXII] To reduce vibration in the blades of centrifugal pumps and the like, the rotor is divided by a radial plane into parts 158,160, Fig 15, so that the natural vibration of the two blade parts have different periods. Frictional contact between the tips of the blade parts is secured by a slight undercut 162 ; the closing pressure may be provided by the fluid being pumped. A disc 166 may provide a damping friction on the discharge ends of the blades. Instead of the undercut, the rotor portions may be divided by thin inserts of an artificial resin, or be linked by small steel balls housed in complementary recesses in the meeting faces of the vanes. In another form, the rotor is not divided and small bodies such as rivets or clips, are attached with a slight play to non-nodal parts of the vanes. To reduce the cause of vibration, supports or vanes in the inlet and outlet channels, for example, the vanes 12, Fig, 2, are arranged out of line with the vanes 6.
