Abstract

Soap-thickened petroleum distillate compositions are manufactured by a continuous process in which a solution of a saponifiable material in the petroleum distillate and a suspension of a saponifying agent in the petroleum distillate are prepared, heated to the temperature necessary for saponification and then mixed together in a high-speed mixer of the Lancaster disperser type so that saponification takes place. The petroleum distillate may be gasoline, kerosene, gas oil or lubricating oil while saponifying agents mentioned are the hydroxides of calcium, barium, strontium, magnesium, aluminium, lead, lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium and caesium and the oxides of calcium and magnesium. The saponifiable materials may be beef stearin, mutton tallow, hog fat, lard oil, neat's foot oil, soya bean oil, cottonseed oil, corn oil, hydrogenated fish oils, degras, rosin, oleic acid, stearic acid, tallow fatty acids, degras fatty acids, cottonseed oil fatty acids, hydrogenated fish oil fatty acids, synthetic fatty acids produced by the oxidation of paraffin wax, or naphthenic acids. The soap-thickened compositions may contain additional ingredients such as oil soluble thickeners, for example, polyisobutylene, polymethacrylate esters or polyvinyl butyl ether, organic swelling agents, for example rubber or synthetic substitutes therefor, amine, phenolic or amino phenolic oxidation inhibitors, water, degras, degras alcohol, saturated or unsaturated alcohols of more than 3 carbon atoms, glycerine, glycols, polyglycol, glycol ethers, dyes, pigments, extreme pressure lubricating agents and amine or Schiff's base metal deactivators. Where the additional ingredients are soluble they may be dissolved in the petroleum distillate used in dissolving the saponifiable material or dispersing the saponifying agent. The soap-thickened composition may be diluted with petroleum distillate after its preparation and the actual saponification may be carried out under increased or reduced pressure. In examples (1) a lubricating grease is prepared by saponifying hydrogenated fish oil fatty acids, dissolved in mineral lubricating oil containing zinc naphthenate and polybutene thickener, with a suspension of hydrated lime in mineral lubricating oil containing phenyl alpha naphthylamine and (2) a solidified fuel is prepared by saponifying a mixture of hydrogenated fish oil fatty acids and rosin oil, dissolved in gasoline, with a dispersion of sodium hydroxide in gasoline.
