Abstract
586,052. Magnetic compasses. AUTOFLIGHT CORPORATION. Aug. 16, 1944, No. 15626. Convention date, Aug. 20, 1943. [Class 97 (ii)] The magnet system is connected, e.g. by a small gimbal system 55 or flexible diaphragm, to a shaft 34 journalled in the support 28 and geared at 41 to a spindle 39 carrying a damping vane 27, which moves in the liquid filled compartment 26. The vane 27 may be formed as a pointer moving over the compass scale 25. The magnets 52 are embedded in a toroidal float 50 which is immersed in liquid and is suspended from the shaft 34 so that its centre of buoyancy is above the centre of gravity and the latter is above the centre of suspension. A flange 60 on the float 50 damps the tilting movements of the float. Alternatively, a hood fixed on the yoke 28 is arranged around a radial flange on the float 50 with a small clearance.
