Abstract
584,029. Brushes and mops. DUNNET, D. Oct. 19, 1944, No. 20209. [Class 19] A brush for sweeping underwater surfaces is provided with a movable vane which is spaced from the. stock and constructed so that the pressure of the water will cause the bristles to press against the surface to be cleaned as the brush moves to and fro or up and down. As shown, the upper face of the stock 1 has a bracket 3 at each end supporting a rotatable shaft 4 which carries the vane 5 Each bracket has two lugs 6 having surfaces 7 contacted alternately by the vane as the brush moves to and fro. The lugs 6 may be provided with setscrews so that the amount of angular movement of the vane may be adjusted. The handle 9 may have a slot or projection engaging the vane to assist the swing over of the latter at the end of each stroke. In modifications, more than one vane with separate pivots may be employed, or two vanes may be provided in the form of a V with a single pivot, and the vanes may be curved outwardly to give increased pressure upon the surface cleaned. The vane or vanes may have a certain amount of spring, causing them to flatten out if the brush is moved quickly, so reducing the pressure applied. The brush may have a streamline shape and may have rope or rubber elements instead of bristles.
