Abstract

Photographic film comprises a support which is itself, or is surfaced with, a highly esterified alkyl methacrylate polymer, i.e. one containing few free carboxyl groups, one or more sub-strata of or containing alkyl methacrylate polymer of a lower degree of esterification coated thereon, and a gelatine layer coated on said sub-stratum or upon the outermost of said sub-strata. The support may be of the fully esterified methyl methacrylate polymer or a surface layer of this material on a base of paper, cellulose or its derivatives or a hydrophobic colloid such as plasticised polyvinyl chloride or polystyrene, or on a double base of cellulose acetate and cellulose nitrate or polyethylene and polystyrene. Gelatin is preferably included in the sub-stratum. In an example, a support of paper is coated on both surfaces with a solution of "Diakon" (Registered Trade Mark), toluene, and ethyl alcohol, the coatings allowed to dry, and a sub-stratum applied of a solution of gelatine, salicyclic acid, methyl alcohol, acetone, formaldehyde and methyl methacrylate polymer (20 per cent hydrolysed). In a further example, a layer of methyl methacrylate polymer (20 per cent hydrolysed) in methyl ethyl ketone is applied to the fully esterified methyl methacrylate layer before the application of the mixed gelatin and hydrolysed polymer substratum. Propyl, butyl or other higher methacrylate polymers may be used. Methyl methacrylate polymer containing free carboxyl groups may be prepared by the co-polymerization of methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid in a common solvent, e.g. methyl alcohol and benzene, in the presence of a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide. Alternatively, a fully esterified methyl methacrylate polymer is partially hydrolysed by dissolving in cold aqueous sulphuric acid and heating. The product is precipitated in water, washed in water and ethyl alcohol, redissolved in acetone, reprecipitated and dried at 100 DEG C. Specification 513,238, [Group XX], is referred to.
