Abstract

Monochlorocresol is made by reaction of a molten cresol with chlorine in absence of a solvent until the reaction product contains approximately 1 atom of chlorine per mol. The product may be distilled under reduced pressure. Examples are given of the preparation of 4-chloro- and 6-chloro-o-cresol and 2-chloro-p-cresol.
