Abstract

572,476. Sliding doors. MICHELMAN, N. June 16, 1943,.No. 9678. [Class 20 (iii)] [Also in Group XXV] Vertically sliding doors of warehouses or other buildings of the kind comprising an upper and lower section adapted to be overlapped when opening and moved into position above the doorway are provided with separate torsion and tension springs for counter balancing the lower and upper sections respectively, the tension springs serving also to retard the conjoint movement of both sections towards closing positions In the form show guide posts 18, 19 between adjacent doors are hinged at their upper ends to the structure and removably bolted to shoes 34 in the floor. Two or more doorways may be freed for handling goods by raising the posts by cables 30 passing over movable guide pulleys 29, Figs. 11 and 13, and fixed guide pulleys 31 to winches 32. Springs are preferably provided at the hinges of the posts to assist the movement. The upper section of the door has guide rollers 14, Fig. 10, at each side near its upper edge and the lower section has rollers 15 near its lower edge, Fig. 9, both rollers engaging vertical chained guides 18, 19, and horizontal guides 21 above the opening connected by curved parts 20 with the vertical guides. The lower section is slidably connected with the upper by angle members 11, Fig. 10, and when the sections overlap in opening the upper one rests on arms 16, Fig. 9, carrying the pulleys 15. The upper section is balanced by tension springs 41, 42 and cables 44 passing over pulleys 46, 47 and centrally connected to the door, Fig. 3. The pulleys 46, 47 are carried in swivelled members 50 by brackets 53 fixed to the structure, Fig. 8. The door is opened &c. by cable connected to the lower sections and fusee drums 57, 58, keyed to a shaft 54 driven by motor 61 and gearing. A balancing device comprises torsion springs 64 anchored to a slotted boss adjustably screwed to a central bracket 69, Fig. 3 at one end and to bosses 74 keyed to the shaft 54 at the other ends. During the vertical opening movement, the springs 41 assist the movement of the upper section and during the horizontal movement along the track 21 these retard the movement. The lower section of the door may have any suitable panels and the upper section may be glazed.
