Abstract
570,409. Hand irons. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. June 15. 1943, No. 9561. Convention date, May 22, 1942. Addition to 557,139. [Class 138 (ii)] [Also in Group XI] In this modification of the steam iron described in the parent Specification, a single manually adjusted means sets the sole plate temperature and the rate of flow of water to the steam generating chamber. A shaft 24 in bearings 25 fixed to the top of the body chamber 15 of the iron carries a cam 59 to lift an arm 58 secured to the stem 47 of the needle valve 46 against the action of a spring 52. A second cam 29 on the shaft bears against the end of a sliding rod 30, spring-biassed upwardly, which adjusts the thermostat. The rod 30 has a adjusting screw 32 to calibrate the thermostat. A knob 23 fast on the shaft has a scale 27 and projects through an opening in the cover so as to allow the heat and damping to be set for ironing different fabrics. To allow the iron to be used " dry as well as "with steam" the arm 58 has fast to it a lever 55, Fig. 2, extending through the cover laterally, and held in one or other, position by an over centre spring 56 against pins 57. In a modification the two cams are of disc form 82, 83, Fig. 5, on a vertical spindle, with adjusting knob 87, and press arms 76 and 81 on the valve stem 69 and thermostat spindle 78 respectively against the upward thrust of their springs 75, 78. The thermostat cam 83 is in two equal parts from highest to lowest point each half turn of the knob 87 but the steam cam 82 has one half level to hold the valve shut for dry ironing, and the other half from 'highest to lowest points to give steam appropriate to the thermostat setting. To allow the valve to be shut off when necessary as when warming up, the valve stem is carried up to an external knob 74, and a spring ball and groove detent 95 holds the valve in shut or cam controlled position. A double scale on the knob 87 gives the setting for steam or dry ironing.
