Abstract

579,984. Automatic ordnance. RUAU, F. F., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. June 15, 1943, No. 9604. [Class 92 (ii)] Relates to automatic and semiautomatic breech mechanism for ordnance of the kind in which the rounds are automatically fed to the breech, the sliding breechblock being opened automatically during run-out by a roller 6 on a crank-arm 5 engaging a cam 7 to compress a closing spring (not shown) which is released by the insertion of a round. According to the invention, the speed of closing the breech is increased by providing an additional spring 18 which operates on' the breech-block during the initial part of the closing movement. This spring is compressed at the end of run-out by the roller 6 engaging a surface 22 on a lever 15 after the breechblock has been retained open by the usual catches. The additional spring may be supplemented by a further and disconnectable spring 27 if desired. The invention also includes in combination the devices described in Specifications 579,998 and 579,999 for raising the firing rod 33 about a pivot 37 to an inoperative position clear of an abutment 36 on the usual trigger-operating device 32. Automatic firing is thus prevented and the firing of single rounds is permitted under the control of a lever 39. Specifications 578,477 and 578,478 also are referred to.
