578,178. Grinding cutting tools. PADDON, W. Aug. 21, 1944, No. 15946. [Class 60] A jig for use in sharpening the cutting tips of tools by moving the tip to and fro across the. face of, and in contact with, a rotary lap comprises a part to which the tool or tool holder is secured, and mounted for limited angular movement on another part movable towards the lap against the action of resilient means. The cutter 9 is mounted in a holder 8 which is received in transverse bore 3 of part 1 of the jig ; a clamping screw engages a flat 10 on the holder. The part 1 has a stem 5 fitting into bore 11 of part 2 of the jig ; a pin 6 on the stem engages a keyhole slot 13 on part 2. the base of which has a bore 12 and fits slidably and rotatably on a peg 16 projecting outwardly from the main support of a lapping machine, or a machine, for example, a cylinder boring machine, with which the tool is employed. The bore 12 contains a spring having one end 14 free to engage the end of the peg 16 and the other end secured to a screwed plug for adjustment. In operation, the part 1 is moved so that pin 6 engages one end of slot 13, part 2 is pressed in against the spring towards the lap 18, and is rotated on the peg 16 to carry the tool across the face of the lap ; on completion of this stroke the pin 6 is caused to engage the other end of the slot, and the jig swung back across the lap.
