Abstract
577,624. Stuffing-box substitutes. ALLISCHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. June 1, 1944, No. 10522. Convention date, March 25, 1943. [Class 122 (v)] A seal for the joint between relatively moving members is formed by machined surfaces on a plate 23, Fig. 1, floatingly mounted on one member and on a sealing ring 32 resiliently held in contact with the plate 23 by a pressure producing unit 37 mounted on the other member, which unit includes rings 36, Fig. 4, having interengaging lugs 38 to prevent relative rotary movement and ears 39 on the lugs permanently interengaged to limit axial separation of the rings. In a vehicle of the endless track laying type consisting of a track portion 12 mounted on roller bearings and rotating about an axle 7 on which is secured a bracket 6, the annular plate 23 is secured to a hub retainer 17 by means of a rubber ring 22 and maintained in contact with sealing ring 32 by springs 42 operating between rings 36. The unit is enclosed in a thin impervious resilient tube 43.
