Abstract

577,203. Emulsions; lubricants. ALSMARK, K. O. May 13, 1943, No. 7608. [Classes 1 (i) and 91] Emulsions of the oil-in-water type, suitable as cooling lubricants for metal-cutting tools or for other purposes, are obtained by treating an oily material having an acid value of not less than 70, firstly with aqueous alkali containing only a part of the alkali necessary for the neutralization of the free acids contained in the material at a temperature of substantially 100 to 110‹C., then by the addition of water which may contain di-sodium phosphate, and finally with aqueous alkali containing the rest of the total quantity of alkali necessary to complete the neutralization of the free acids at a temperature of substantially 50 to 55‹C. The process should preferably be so conducted that the final pH of the product is between 8 and 9, say 8.5 Potassium hydroxide is the preferred alkali, but sodium or ammonium hydroxides may be used. Suitable oily materials are tall oil, tall oil acids, animal and vegetabe oils such as whale oil and rape oil of such sort or prepared in such a way that their acid value is at least 70, mineral, tar, animal, and vegetable oils of low acid value which have been mixed with the necessary quantity of animal or vegetable oils of high acid value or with fatty acids such as oleic acid or tall oil'fatty acids. Tall oils or tall oil fatty acid may be pretreated to reduce their acid value (but not below 70) by means of a gentle crack-distillation process.
